Subject: CenturyLink, a Network Provider, to Acquire Level 3, a
Rival
In a $25 billion deal, the two companies will combine to create one of the
largest communications providers for businesses.
By Leslie Picker
To those familiar with the telecommunications industry, the deal
announced between CenturyLink and Level 3 Communications on Monday was
not really a surprise. Both companies provide communications and
services like data, voice and video transmission for large enterprises
and each is trying to scrape away market share from rivals AT&T and
Verizon.
The $25 billion deal would make the combined company the
second-largest provider of communications to business in the United
States, after AT&T. It brings CenturyLink an additional 200,000 route
miles of fiber and potentially big commercial customers. In 2010,
Level 3 struck a multiyear agreement with Netflix to help it stream
its video content to consumers. Level 3 would not comment on whether
Netflix was still a customer.

Subject: FTC Do-Not-Call web page redesigned
Futile as it seems, I decided to file a do-not-call complaint today.
And discovered that the web page for the purpose has been somewhat
redesigned. They now ask you for the hour and minute of the day the
call came in, And then they ask you to choose the type of call from a
pulldown menu.

To the readers -
This post makes me realize that I'm not up on the current Do-Not-Call
laws. If you know about them, please post a summary of the changes,
especially ones that affect cell phones: I'm very interested in the
"prior relationship" exceptions as well. TIA.

Subject: A look inside a Verizon switch location
Guilty-pleasure department -
I don't know why this TV report delights me, but it does: a local
ingénue informs us that the building even has batteries to keep
things going if the power fails.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - An undisclosed location in WAVE Country is
home to one of Verizon's switch locations. Calls, texts and web
browsing on a wireless device with Verizon service from all over the
world, are routed throughout the switch location.
Network operations manager Dennis Robertson said the entire design of
the building is built with Verizon's reliability model in mind.
Back-up generators can keep the building running for days, according
to Robertson.
