Subject: AT&T, Verizon push free iPhones for long-term customers
US cellphone carriers offer deep discounts on new smartphones to
defend customer base
By Drew FitzGerald
The Wall Street Journal
U.S. cellphone carriers are offering their most generous discounts in
years, handing some customers brand-new devices for no money down or
small monthly payments stretched over many months. The discounts from
AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc. require
customers to make long-term commitments that give carriers the
stability they need to reassure investors as they increase spending on
5G network upgrades.

Subject: Verizon Is Finally Giving Away iPhones to Win Over 5G
Customers

* New 5G customers get $1,100 device credit; current users, $800
* The No. 1 U.S. carrier lost phone subscribers last quarter
Facing pressure from its wireless competitors, Verizon Communications
Inc. is offering free Apple and Android phones to customers who sign
up for unlimited plans on its faster 5G network.
Once a holdout on giveaways to existing customers, the largest
U.S. wireless carrier is now matching similar trade-in offers from
AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile US Inc. - part of an effort to reverse recent
subscriber losses.

Amazon Sidewalk Poised to Sweep You Into Its Mesh
By Lisa Vaas
On June 8, Amazon's pulling all its devices into a device-to-device
wireless mix, inspiring FUD along the way. Now's the time to opt out
if you're be-FUDdled.
What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
A few things, security experts told Threatpost on Monday. It probably
should surprise no-one that the impending mesh network turn-on date in
seven days has triggered fear, uncertainty and doubt, for a few
reasons. First, the initiative involves a brand-new, untested Wi-Fi
protocol that's going live without having been beta tested. Also, it's
being turned on by default, making it opt-out only.

***** Moderator's Note *****
Amazon's move - conducted, and Ms. Vaas points out, in a way intended
to obliterate any objections, seems to me like an effort to construct
a "virtual" private network from every local ISP or Cable Internet
connection that's close enough to an Amazon-made device.
