Subject: Verizon grows content leverage compared to 'subscale' Fios
by Ben Munson
Verizon reported 82,000 Fios Video net losses during the first quarter
of 2021, dropping its total to approximately 3.77 million. (Fierce
Wireless)(Monica Alleven/Fierce Wireless)
As Verizon's Fios Video subscribers continue to dwindle, the company
is gaining broader relationships with content partners that will play
a role in its growing fixed wireless business.
Ronan Dunne, executive vice president and CEO for Verizon's Consumer
Group, said his company was previously a "subscale" purchaser of
content when it was limited to the Fios Video footprint in the
Northeast. But recent content partnerships with Disney+, Discovery+
and other streaming services have greatly increased Verizon's scale
with content owners, something that will come in handy as the company
aspires to grow its fixed wireless business into a nationwide
residential broadband competitor.

Subject: Verizon says forcing people off old plans to get FCC
subsidy isn't "upselling"
Verizon says it'll reverse subsidy restriction after "complex"
billing-system update.
By Jon Brodkin
Verizon is defending its practice of forcing customers to switch plans
to get a government-funded $50-per-month discount, telling the Federal
Communications Commission that this is not the same thing as "upsel-
ling." Verizon has partially backtracked from this restrictive policy
but told the FCC it will take "about a month" to deploy a billing-
software update that will let more home-Internet customers get the
discounts without changing plans.

Subject: Verizon Accused Of Fleecing Broadband Customers To Skirt
FCC Economic Subsidy Requirements
Some families have struggled to afford internet services during the
pandemic due to highs price and a waning jobs market. As such, the FCC
introduced the Emergency Broadband Benefit program to help these
families with a discount of up to $50 a month toward broadband
service. However, companies only need to offer one plan to comply with
the program, and Verizon is accused of trying to game the system.
