We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

Which is why I troubleshoot as much as possible before calling anyone so I can tell them what's wrong (assuming I haven't fixed it by that point). I can't say for certain, but I really think when I tell the technician/mechanic exactly what's going on using the correct terms for the various thingamajigs, they decide they can't fleece me. To keep this telecom related in 1995 BellSouth installed phone service to my house. The static was horrendous. They came out, claimed to have fixed it, but didn't. Finally I went out, fixed it myself, and then called them offering to let their techs know how to fix a static-filled line. -- John Mayson <john@mayson.us> Austin, Texas, USA

You mean you actually spliced in a replacement for the part of the line that the squirrels had chewed half-way through? That's what makes for static on my line, anyway, roughly once every 3-5 years. Subject: Financial Times Introduces Web App in Effort to Bypass Apple Message-ID: <p06240827ca14689abe63@[192.168.182.16]> Financial Times Introduces Web App in Effort to Bypass Apple By ERIC PFANNER June 7, 2011 PARIS - The Financial Times on Tuesday introduced a mobile Web application aimed at luring readers away from Apple's iTunes App Store, throwing down the gauntlet over new business conditions that Apple is set to impose on publishers who sell digital subscriptions via iTunes. A number of publishers have expressed their displeasure with Apple's plan to retain 30 percent of the revenue from subscriptions sold on iTunes, and to keep customer data from such sales, beginning at the end of June. At the same time, mobile applications are a fast-growing source of new readers and revenue, so publishers have been reluctant to pull their applications from the iTunes store. The Financial Times, the British daily, has tried to get around this problem by designing a new app that includes much of the functionality of an iPad or iPhone application, while residing on the open Web. It employs a new Web technology standard called HTML5, which allows programmers to create a single application that can run on a variety of devices, including Apple's iPhone and iPad, Google's Android system and the BlackBerry PlayBook, although the new app does not work on some versions of the devices. The Financial Times said it would encourage users of its iPad and iPhone applications to migrate to the new app. It said it did not plan to comply with Apple's proposed conditions, even if that meant Apple removed the existing applications from iTunes. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/08/technology/08ftapp.html

During an interview with AllThingsD following his appearance last week at the D9 event, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets CEO Ralph de la Vega said that AT&T thinks that making the card smaller "is a no-brainer" and he believes that will happen."
