We must fight spam for the same reason we fight crime: not because we are naive enough to believe that we will ever stamp it out, but because we do not want the kind of world that results when no one stands against crime.  - Geoffrey Welsh

He also used the term "signal element" a lot. The earliest known use of "bit" in a published paper was by Shannon in 1948, but he didn't coin the term. That honor goes to J.W. Tukey [a Massachusetts boy], who proposed that "bit" was an acceptable [and clever] contraction of the term "binary digit." It would be a good decade before the term was in common usage, with the BSTJ paper cited by Lisa and Jeff being an excellent example. Subject: New Bill Would Criminalize Illegal TV Show Streaming Message-ID: <4DCD54ED.1020507@annsgarden.com> Currently, felony status only applies to uploads and downloads By John Eggerton -- Multichannel News, 5/12/2011 A bipartisan trio of Senators Thursday introduced a bill that would make illegally streaming TV shows or movies a felony. The bill (S. 978) was introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Christopher Coons (D-Del.), and came the same day that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) re-introduced a bipartisan bill to give the government more tools to shut down Web sites that traffic in stolen intellectual property, including TV shows and movies. http://tinyurl.com/3zq7sxk

Subject: Great undersea fiber optic cable graphic/panorama Message-ID: <siegman-557604.13574814052011@bmedcfsc-srv02.tufts.ad.tufts.edu> For anyone interested in undersea fiber optic cables, particularly in teaching or giving talks about them, there's a great scannable panoramic cartoon/graphic illustration at http://www.tycotelecom.com/process.aspx (Try blowing up the window to the full width of your display, adjusting its top and bottom margins until the text is all gone, then dragging back and forth the little indicator that runs across the bottom.) If anyone knows of a way to capture or download the whole thing, I'd be glad to hear about it.
