Nyquist was a "mark and space" man. He also used the term "signal
element" a lot.
The earliest known use of "bit" in a published paper was by Shannon in
1948, but he didn't coin the term. That honor goes to J.W. Tukey [a
Massachusetts boy], who proposed that "bit" was an acceptable [and
clever] contraction of the term "binary digit."
It would be a good decade before the term was in common usage, with the
BSTJ paper cited by Lisa and Jeff being an excellent example.

A bipartisan trio of Senators Thursday introduced a bill that would make
illegally streaming TV shows or movies a felony.
The bill (S. 978) was introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.),
John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Christopher Coons (D-Del.), and came the same
day that Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) re-introduced a bipartisan bill to
give the government more tools to shut down Web sites that traffic in
stolen intellectual property, including TV shows and movies.

teaching or giving talks about them, there's a great scannable panoramic
