Subject: Why Did Dial-Up Modems Make So Much Noise?
By Benj Edwards
Screeeech . . . hisss . . . squaawk. These are familiar sounds to
anyone who's ever used dial-up internet or called BBSes. It seemed
especially noisy late at night. Have you ever wondered why all that
noise was necessary? And did you know you could have muted your noisy
modem?

Yes, I did know how to mute my modem: since the speaker was on the
top, I would park my coffee cup there, and doing that reduced the
noise to the same level as most other background sounds.
There were also commands in the "Hayes" list, which was a defacto
standard, that would mute or lower the volume level of the speaker.

Subject: Incognito Mode Unmasked: What It Does and What It Doesn't
Do
Smartphones are a vital life tool and yet also a privacy nightmare. If
you don't take the proper precautions, you can quite literally expose
yourself to unwitting friends or family members who pick up your
device and stumble into the wrong app or folder. Thankfully, phone
makers offer a plethora of ways we can protect ourselves, such as the
mysteriously-named incognito mode.

***** Moderator's Note *****
I have to use "incognito" mode on Chrome quite often, to see websites
that demand I disable Chrome's ad-blocker. Some sites have now been
coded to demand that I use neither an ad-blocker nor Incognito mode,
and I'd like to know if there's a way (short of disabling Javascript)
to avoid the demands.
