Subject: AT&T Drops Its T-Mobile Merger Bid In $4b Fail
Faced with the prospect of a long war with U.S regulators it seemed
destined to lose, AT&T announced on Monday it would give up on its
$39-billion attempt to purchase T-Mobile, even though the decision
will cost the nation's number-two carrier at least $4 billion to walk
away from the deal.
The proposed merger would have brought together the second- and
fourth-largest telecommunications carriers in the United States,
ultimately surpassing Verizon Wireless to be the largest telecom in
the country. As recently as 11 days ago AT&T said it would not back
down (though Chief Financial Officer John Stephens did seem to betray
a bit of uncertainty). Instead, AT&T is out $4 billion with nothing to
show for a proposed merger that drew instant fire from consumer groups
and spectrum geeks.

Subject: AT&T ran away with billions of dollars
AT&T Midwest, AT&T Legacy T and AT&T Southeast
As many Americans with stagnant paychecks found that they were
receiving smaller refunds on Tax Day and wondered if they would even
have a job a year from now, massive corporations like AT&T ran away
with billions of dollars in tax cuts, cut jobs, failed to provide
promised wage increases, and continued to send jobs overseas.
Over the weekend, AT&T Midwest and Legacy T workers reached the
one-year anniversary of their contract expiring and the company
continues to stonewall workers at the bargaining table, while CWA
members at AT&T Southeast are gearing up for the start of their own
negotiations with the company this year. To put pressure on AT&T,
CWAers across the country rallied to draw attention to our contract
fight and to push Congress to hold corporations accountable for their
broken tax cut promises.

Subject: Virtual Cupids Hit With $3 Million CAN SPAM Judgment
By Terri J. Seligman
You don't hear about a lot of CAN SPAM cases - probably because
there's no private right of action for consumers, so the statute
doesn't provide much of interest to the consumer class action bar. But
a case like this shows that the statute has teeth and, with the right
set of facts, can be used effectively against companies who send
emails for purposes that would make cupid blush.
