Dish Network is reportedly in talks to merge with T-Mobile US, a deal
that would give T-Mobile what it has been looking for: more spectrum.
Dish, a satellite TV provider, has been buying up spectrum licenses for
years but has not yet used its airwaves to offer cellular service. Dish
and T-Mobile (owned by Deutsche Telekom) "are in close agreement about
what the combined company would look like, with Dish Chief Executive
Charlie Ergen becoming the company's chairman and his T-Mobile
counterpart, John Legere, serving as the combined company's CEO," The
Wall Street Journal reported last night, citing people familiar with the
matter. "Tougher questions about a purchase price and the mix of cash
and stock that would be used to pay for a deal remain unresolved, the
people said. One of the people characterized the talks as at 'the
formative stage,' and said an agreement might not ultimately be hammered
out."

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that DISH Network Corp
is in talks with T-Mobile US Inc for a possible merger, following which
shares of both the companies opened strong on Thursday and were trading
higher.
Kevin Smithen, Macquarie Capital analyst, was on CNBC to weigh in on
this and to discuss why he thinks Verizon Communications Inc.
becomes a sell if this deal goes through.

Shares of Dish Network Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. are rising after the
Journal splashed the news that the two companies are in merger talks
across the front page. Verizon Communications Inc.'s stock dropped in
early trading.
Yet Citigroup analyst Michael Rollins argues that Dish may ultimately
end up in the arms of Verizon.
"We increasingly see two options for DISH: buy T-Mobile US or sell to
Verizon," Mr. Rollins wrote in a research note. In fact, he says a sale
to Verizon is the more likely outcome.

Over the last couple of years, an array of media companies, venture
capitalists and wealthy individuals have quietly explored buying a stake
in The Huffington Post. The most recent valuation, according to half a
dozen people briefed on the matter: about $1 billion.
Those interested have included the European media companies Le Monde
and Axel Springer; the Napster founder Sean Parker; and the private
equity firm General Atlantic, those people said, speaking on condition
of anonymity. Some of the talks were navigated by AOL, The Huffington
Post's parent company, as it sought ways to raise money, others by the
site's well-connected founder, Arianna Huffington.
But when the music stopped last month and Verizon's $4.4 billion
takeover of AOL was announced, The Huffington Post was still owned by
AOL - creating an unlikely corporate home for one of the nation's
leading liberal news outlets.

Verizon's Coverage Area of New York City for Fiber Optic FiOS is a
Miserable 46% to 59%; Upstate New York is Worse.
Verizon NY is supposed to have 100% of New York City upgraded, replacing
the aging copper-based networks with a fiber optic infrastructure for
the delivery of a service called FiOS that offers cable TV, High-speed
Internet and Digital Phone services. Being done as part of a cable
franchise that was signed in 2008, the construction was to be completed
by June 30th, 2014.
Unfortunately, in April 2013, then NYC Public Advocate, now-Mayor Bill
de Blasio presented facts that Verizon's buildout was way behind
schedule. Using data from July-through-December 2012, (and published in
April 2013), Verizon only had 51% of NYC residential 'housing units'
capable of ordering FiOS service. According to the City, there are 3.4
million housing units and Verizon had "passed" only 1.7 million of them.

AT&T appears ready to play ball with the FCC to land DirecTV

At this point, AT&T's $48.5 billion purchase of DirecTV appears to be
all but guaranteed. However, if the FCC is going to approve the
industry-changing purchase, AT&T will have to abide by new net
neutrality regulations.
According to sources at The Washington Post, AT&T is ready to concede
major aspects of the new net neutrality rules that the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) put forth earlier this year, the same
rules that AT&T has strongly opposed publicly. In order for the deal to
go through, AT&T will have to abide by three major mandates:
1. Do not slow websites down.
2. Do not prevent people from accessing competing websites.
3. Do not take any payment from website operators in the hopes
that they can speed up their content, thus creating an
Internet "fast lane."

In Colorado, Pitkin and Garfield Counties are trying to figure out why
911 systems went down during a communications blackout last week.
Pitkin County Emergency Dispatch Director Bruce Romero wants
answers on a couple of issues. First, why wasn't it possible to at
least call 911?
"Generally CenturyLink would have actual backup systems," said Romero
Tuesday. "Not only other lines in the ground but microwave systems that
could do a back up. And for some reason that didn't work."
