Not really a subsidiary, but a separate company since 1999. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture between Verizon Communications (the parent company of all those legacy landlines) and Britain's Vodafone PLC. Verizon owns 55 percent and Vodaphone owns 45 percent. Ironically, the Verizon name was first used by the wireless joint venture, months before Bell Atlantic bought GTE and dubbed the resulting company Verizon Communications. Bob Goudreau Cary, NC

About three months later, in July 2000, the merger of the landline companies was effective, and the VZ name began to now be applied to the landline sides, however, it was understood three months earlier in April 2000 (when the wireless sides adopted the VZ-Wireless name) that when the landline sides officially/effectively were merged, that this new VZ name would also apply to them. And with the ability now to pick out key words via software, it becomes very cost-effective to process every call with a machine rather than require some human to review everything in real-time. -- Regards, David.
