A Parent's Struggle With a Child's iPad Addiction

I think my 6-year-old is addicted to the iPad.

He asks for it constantly. He wants to use it in the car. He wants to
use it at every unscheduled moment at home. He brings it to the
dinner table.

When I tell him it's time to shut off the iPad and head up to bed, or
put his shoes on, or head out to the bus, he doesn't hear me the
first three times I ask. Sometimes, he gets bizarrely upset when I
say I have to take it away now - out-of-character upset. That's what
makes me think he's addicted.

And trust me - having read The New York Times series on the
physiological effects of electronics on young minds, I'm plenty
worried.

Now, before you begin sending the volleys of "bad parent" e-mails,
let me reassure you: I've described what my son wants, not what he
gets. We do have policies. The rule for my three kids is: no
electronics on school days except what you actually need for
schoolwork. No gadgets at mealtime or bedtime. Gadgets are O.K. when
you're home sick or in the car for long trips.

My older two kids manage to stick with those rules (mostly). My
youngest, though, asks for that darned iPad constantly.

And I'll be straight with you: I generally enforce the rule, but 
sometimes it's tough. Because, let's face it: When he's on the iPad, 
he's happy. He's quiet. He's engaged. And in this family, the two 
older siblings form a tween bloc (my oldest are 13 and almost 12), 
and then there's a big age gap. So it can be hard to find activities, 
games or conversations that involve all three simultaneously.

My recent experience with Verizon in Maryland is little better. I used
my girlfriend's land line to get to service. I had transferred my land
line to Consumer Cellular after a year of bad service. Verizon told me
three times that the service had been terminated. I got an email the
next day from CC that Verizon had finally transferred the number. If I
hadn't called I wonder if it would have been even longer. And when did
they start making you dial through mail hell on an operator call. At
least Fire Police are top menu. The problem with the cell phone was
that I could call but incoming calls got busy (the problem with my
land line.)

That's why:

1. I always delete emails from my email server as soon as I download
them.

2. I would never get an email account through Google, Yahoo, or any
other web search company.  Google's Gmail admits that they scan emails
for keywords so that they can target advertising; who knows what else
they do with the info.

I have my own domain (richbonnie.com) with it's own mail server,
hosted by www.1and1.com .  I can have up to 2500 email addresses (my
wife and I currently use about 25).  I regularly make up throw-away
addresses for special purposes, and then delete them when no longer
needded.  

As a side benefit, I can change my ISP without changing my email
address and the hassle of telling everyone about the change.  Yes,
Gmail has that advantage also, but see #2 above.

I had a Debian GNU/Linux server running for years, but I didn't keep
on on security patches and it was owned, so I've had it off since
then.

The point is that I used to have ~20 email addresses at any one time,
but I found it to be too difficult to keep track of all of them, and
which company I had used them for. To make matters worse, I was always
turning them off two days before the company sent out something I
did want.

For those of you that enjoyed poking through the old BSTJs but got
frustrated by the slow... let me rephrase that... F'in slow response
times, time to rejoice.

The website was down for about a week, but it is now back up with a
new look, and instantaneous downloads of documents. No more loading of
documents overnight....
