Subject: Against Headphones Message-ID: <p0624080fc94ed04cb435@[10.0.1.2]> Against Headphones By VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN January 7, 2011 One in five teenagers in America can't hear rustles or whispers, according to a study published in August in The Journal of the American Medical Association. These teenagers exhibit what's known as slight hearing loss, which means they often can't make out consonants like T's or K's, or the plinking of raindrops. The word "talk" can sound like "aw." The number of teenagers with hearing loss - from slight to severe - has jumped 33 percent since 1994. Given the current ubiquity of personal media players - the iPod appeared almost a decade ago - many researchers attribute this widespread hearing loss to exposure to sound played loudly and regularly through headphones. (Earbuds, in particular, don't cancel as much noise from outside as do headphones that rest on or around the ear, so earbud users typically listen at higher volume to drown out interference.) Indeed, the August report reinforces the findings of a 2008 European study of people who habitually blast MP3 players, including iPods and smartphones. According to that report, headphone users who listen to music at high volumes for more than an hour a day risk permanent hearing loss after five years. Maybe the danger of digital culture to young people is not that they have hummingbird attention spans but that they are going deaf. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/magazine/09FOB-medium-t.html

Subject: Verizon Could Bring Apple Millions of iPhone Users Message-ID: <p06240812c94edac52895@[10.0.1.2]> Verizon Could Bring Apple Millions of iPhone Users By YUKARI IWATANI KANE and SHAYNDI RAICE JANUARY 8, 2011 Apple Inc. watchers are already doing rough calculations and think Verizon Wireless could generate sales of millions of iPhones this year. Verizon has invited reporters to a press event where it is expected the wireless carrier will announce it will carry the iPhone. At the Consumer Electronics Show, conference goers weighed in on the news. Sales estimates vary, but many analysts agree Apple will likely sell 9 million to 12 million iPhones on Verizon's network next year, a huge boost in the iconic phone's most important market. To put that into perspective, AT&T Inc. sold 11.1 million iPhones in the first nine months of 2010. Piper Jaffray & Co. estimates a full-year total of 14.5 million iPhones for AT&T, accounting for 12% of Apple's overall revenue and 30% of its iPhone sales. In its fiscal year, ended September, Apple reported revenue of $20.34 billion. Verizon, the country's largest wireless carrier, will have the phone available in stores around the end of the month, a person familiar with the matter says. ... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704030704576070090093187986.html Verizon Is Said to Be Planning to Announce iPhone 4 on Its Network By MIGUEL HELFT January 7, 2011 SAN FRANCISCO - Verizon Wireless plans to announce on Tuesday that it will soon begin selling Apple's iPhone 4, according to a person with direct knowledge of the plans. The long-expected arrival of the iPhone on Verizon will end years of exclusivity for AT&T and is likely to upend the smartphone market in the United States. It is not clear how soon after the announcement, which will be made in New York, the phone will be available for sale. ... http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/08/technology/08verizon.html

The technology behind their high-speed networks matters, too. The cellular network of AT&T, the current iPhone provider, runs on a standard called UMTS. Verizon's uses something called CDMA, and that will make a difference in how the phones work. Most notably, Verizon customers aren't able to surf the Web or exchange email while they're talking on their phone. That sort of on-the-go multitasking-which AT&T and iPhone maker Apple Inc. have touted in advertising-might seem a little much to many people, but it's often what iPhone users are signing up for. ... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704657304575540072333071694.html
