The www prefix is a convention but there's no technical requirement that a site have www in its name. When you see sites named wwwNN, that invariably means that they have a bunch of web servers sharing the load, and when you first visit the site as www.example.com, it redirects you to one of the numbered servers picked either at random, or picking one with a relatively low load.
