Kitchener-Waterloo/Guelph, Ontario Exchange History
20 April 1997

This is an attempt to trace the telephone exchange history of the
Kitchener, Ontario region, including Galt, Guelph and Waterloo. This
should indicate the approximate timelines of development for the manual
and automatic telephone systems in the region.

Telephone directories serving the Kitchener area were checked from
either the Bell Canada historical collection (on microfilm, collections
until 1979), from directories of recent years (from Phonefiche
copies since 1980) and from current directories.

Some information has not been analysed thoroughly, nor have various
topics been fully documented. For instance, not every single change
to the communities listed in each directory has been tracked. A few
directories have not been checked yet, especially during times when
major exchange developments were not apparent. Directories for certain
years or times were also unavailable.

Some findings in certain years might have actually occurred earlier, but
were not checked due to research time constraints. The directory coverage
areas have also been changed over time; for instance, Guelph and Kitchener
have been in separate directories for certain years.

Please send correspondence and contributions regarding this history to
David Leibold: aa070@freenet.toronto.on.ca or dleibold@else.net.

The timeline begins with the earliest-found telephone listings...

Jul 1883

- Ontario Department directory from Bell Telephone Company of Canada
- 68 pages in this edition
- Agencies listed: Bowmanville, Cobourg, Dundas, Galt*, Guelph*, Hamilton,
Hespeler*, Newcastle, Oshawa, Port Hope, Toronto, Whitby, Palermo,
Springfield, Troy, Waterdown (agencies listed in order as they appeared
in the directory, the last four out of sequence for whatever reason).
- *: Galt, Guelph and Hespeler were the early exchanges of note in
the area, before Berlin (Kitchener) and Waterloo listings were available.

Nov 1883

- Ontario Department directory - 86 pages
- New agencies: Belleville, Brantford, Brighton, Colborne, Deseronto,
Ingersoll, Kingston, Lindsay, London, Millbrook, Napanee, Paris*,
Peterboro, St Thomas, Trenton, Woodstock, Glanworth, Omemee (in
order as presented in Ontario Department directory)

Mar 1884

- Ontario Department directory from Bell Telephone Company of Canada
- Agencies listed: Amherstburg, Belleville, Bowmanville, Brantford,
Brighton, Chatham, Cobourg, Colborne, Dundas, Galt*, Guelph*, Hamilton,
Ingersoll, Kingston, Lindsay, London, Napanee, Oshawa, Paris, Peterboro,
Port Hope, St Thomas, Toronto, Trenton, Windsor, Woodstock, Essex Centre
(Essex Centre was placed at the end of the directory for whatever reason).
- Some agencies appeared to have vanished - some investigation is
needed to determine whether these were combined into listings of
other agencies, or were dropped for other reasons (independent telco,
  different directory set, etc.)

Jan 1885

- Ontario Department directory - 100 pages.
- Berlin (including Bridgeport) and Waterloo now listed agencies.
- Kitchener was known as Berlin until some point between 1915 and 1917
- Exchange hours for Berlin were 0800-2200 "weekdays", 1400-1600 Sundays,
1000-1200 Holidays (not sure if Saturday was considered a weekday)

Dec 1886

- Kitchener-Waterloo dial service added - 5-digit numbers of form "n-xxxx"
  where n is a digit from 2 to 8 (e.g. 2-3456, 8-7654). No apparent
conversion relationship existed between the old manual number and the

- Apparently Kitchener and Waterloo was officially merged into one
exchange area with the conversion to dial. There is a possibility
that this was set up under a single exchange centre, although
numbers were treated according to the separate cities.
