This should indicate the approximate timelines of development for the manual and automatic telephone systems in the region. Telephone directories serving the Kitchener area were checked from either the Bell Canada historical collection (on microfilm, collections until 1979), from directories of recent years (from Phonefiche copies since 1980) and from current directories. Some information has not been analysed thoroughly, nor have various topics been fully documented. For instance, not every single change to the communities listed in each directory has been tracked. A few directories have not been checked yet, especially during times when major exchange developments were not apparent. Directories for certain years or times were also unavailable. Some findings in certain years might have actually occurred earlier, but were not checked due to research time constraints. The directory coverage areas have also been changed over time; for instance, Guelph and Kitchener have been in separate directories for certain years. Please send correspondence and contributions regarding this history to David Leibold: aa070@freenet.toronto.on.ca or dleibold@else.net. The timeline begins with the earliest-found telephone listings... Jul 1883 - Ontario Department directory from Bell Telephone Company of Canada - 68 pages in this edition - Agencies listed: Bowmanville, Cobourg, Dundas, Galt*, Guelph*, Hamilton, Hespeler*, Newcastle, Oshawa, Port Hope, Toronto, Whitby, Palermo, Springfield, Troy, Waterdown (agencies listed in order as they appeared in the directory, the last four out of sequence for whatever reason). - *: Galt, Guelph and Hespeler were the early exchanges of note in the area, before Berlin (Kitchener) and Waterloo listings were available. Nov 1883 - Ontario Department directory - 86 pages - New agencies: Belleville, Brantford, Brighton, Colborne, Deseronto, Ingersoll, Kingston, Lindsay, London, Millbrook, Napanee, Paris*, Peterboro, St Thomas, Trenton, Woodstock, Glanworth, Omemee (in order as presented in Ontario Department directory) Mar 1884 - Ontario Department directory from Bell Telephone Company of Canada - Agencies listed: Amherstburg, Belleville, Bowmanville, Brantford, Brighton, Chatham, Cobourg, Colborne, Dundas, Galt*, Guelph*, Hamilton, Ingersoll, Kingston, Lindsay, London, Napanee, Oshawa, Paris, Peterboro, Port Hope, St Thomas, Toronto, Trenton, Windsor, Woodstock, Essex Centre (Essex Centre was placed at the end of the directory for whatever reason). - Some agencies appeared to have vanished - some investigation is needed to determine whether these were combined into listings of other agencies, or were dropped for other reasons (independent telco, different directory set, etc.) Jan 1885 - Ontario Department directory - 100 pages. - Berlin (including Bridgeport) and Waterloo now listed agencies. - Kitchener was known as Berlin until some point between 1915 and 1917 - Exchange hours for Berlin were 0800-2200 "weekdays", 1400-1600 Sundays, 1000-1200 Holidays (not sure if Saturday was considered a weekday) Dec 1885 Dec 1886 Dec 1887 - Ontario Department directory - 262 pages. - Telephone numbers were introduced in major centres: Belleville, Guelph, Hamilton, Kingston, London, Toronto. Other exchanges were connected by name rather than number. Dec 1889 - Directory territory now split - east and west "department" regions - Ontario Department West directory of this date included Berlin (Kitchener) and adjoining towns, but apparently Guelph went to the Ontario Department East directory region. - Exchanges with phone numbers: Brantford, Galt, London, Petrolea, Sarnia, St Thomas, Windsor, Woodstock Dec 1890 - Ontario Department - West directory - 116 pages. - Berlin did not use telephone numbers yet - Chatham and Stratford now used telephone numbers. Nov 1900 Nov 1901 Nov 1902 Sept 1903 Oct 1904 Apr 1905 Nov 1906 May 1907 Apr 1908 Oct 1908 - The "Western Ontario" Directory territory is listed as "west of Hamilton, Guelph and Palmerston" (including Windsor, London, Sarnia, Goderich, and Berlin (Kitchener) areas). - 370 pages - Communities in directory included: Berlin, Brantford, Burford, Elmira, Galt, New Dundee, New Hamburg, Paris, St George, Stratford, Waterloo. - Directory did not include Guelph, as this was presumably in an adjoining directory area. No apparent conversion relationship existed between the old manual number and the new dial number. - Apparently Kitchener and Waterloo was officially merged into one exchange area with the conversion to dial. There is a possibility that this was set up under a single exchange centre, although numbers were treated according to the separate cities. - Hespeler dial service added - 3-digit numbers Aug 1941 Aug 1942 Jan 1943 - Communities in directory: Acton, Arthur, Ayr, Baden, Belwood, Breslau, Elmira, Elora, Fergus, Galt, Guelph, Hespeler, Kitchener-Waterloo, Linwood, New Dundee, New Hamburg, Preston, Rockwood, Wellesley. Dec 1956 - Directory date 2 Dec 1956 - Dial service found: Guelph (TAylor 2-, TAylor 4-), Rockwood (ULster 6-) - Hespeler dial service is under OLive 8- (2L5D format); need to check for exact introduction dates of 2L5D here. There would be no 1+ or 112+ prefix before a long distance call; just the area code plus number for calls to points outside 519 area, and just the 7-digit number for calls within 519. - New Hamburg local calling with Baden mentioned (though no dial service) - SHerwood 4- (744) added to Kitchener-Waterloo Nov 1958 Nov 1959 - Breslau dial service - MIdway 8- Oct 1960 - 16 Oct 1960 date on directory - dial service added for: Ayr, Elora, Galt, New Dundee, Plattsville - Dial service now available in: Ayr 632 Elmira MOhawk 9- Elora 846 Galt 621, 623 Guelph TAylor 2-, TAylor 4- Hespeler OLive 8- Kitchener-Waterloo SHerwood 2-, SHerwood 3-, SHerwood 4-, SHerwood 5- New Dundee 696 Paris HIckory 2- Plattsville 684 Preston OLive 3- Rockwood ULster 6- St Jacobs MOhawk 4- (Note that "All Number Calling" (ANC) format was used for the new exchanges, bypassing the 2L5D format) - Belwood exchange disappears and is now part of Fergus exchange (and presumably assimilated into Bell Tel. of Canada) - Bright exchange (GLadstone 4-) introduced in this directory; it is an independent exchange [Oxford Tel.
