Subject: Englewood, NJ 1951 Customer Long Distance Dialing Date: Fri, 20 Sep 1996 23:40:00 EDT Sender: ptownson@massis.lcs.mit.edu Mark Cuccia spent a *long time* typing in the material which follows and I want to thank him for passing along this historical account of long distance dialing from 1951. PAT Date: Tue, 17 Sep 1996 12:17:02 -0500 (CDT) From: Mark J Cuccia Reply-To: Mark J Cuccia Subject: Englewood NJ 1951 Customer Long Distance Dialing Beginning on 10 November 1951, Englewood NJ customers were the first to be able to dial long distance "nationwide". By nationwide, they could call certain cities, only, but they were able to dial the metro areas of Sacramento CA and Oakland / San Francisco CA on the opposite coast. I mentioned in the Digest before that for the customer dialing experiment in 1951, Oakland used area code 415, while San Francisco used area code =318=, which was actually assigned to the split of Louisiana's 504 sometime in 1956/57. Since 1957, 318 covers Louisiana except for the southeastern part which remained 504. I could only guess as to *why* 318 was used for San Francisco, as I have never seen anything officially documented. I had thought that maybe there were central office code/name conflicts between the two cities, but was told that there were no conflicts, and prior to the 1991 introduction of area code 510 for Oakland and east of the bay, there had been local seven-digit dialing for decades, since probably the 1930's. Another guess, which I think is correct, is that the use of separate area codes made traffic flow more efficient, as each city had their own toll or tandem switches. Since the "card-translator" wasn't introduced until 1952/53, the originating switch had to translate the dialed digits in a relay system. It was more convenient for the switch to do three-digit translation until the card-translator box was implemented. Therefore, 318 indicated a call to San Francisco's toll switch, while 415 indicated a call to Oakland's toll switch. I was recently *loaned* (I am going to have to return it to the owner) a copy of the instruction booklet distributed to customers in Englewood NJ in 1951, and I will transcribe what I can, and summarize the rest. I will try to use brackets [] to enclose my notes surrounding and inserted among the original text. ------------------ [The front cover of this 8-inch by 5-and-1/2-inch booklet is a deep green color, with a WECO model 302 black desk phone. The top of the cover has "HOW TO USE Long Distance Dialing", with "Long Distance Dialing" written in large script. The bottom of the cover has printed "A NEW BELL SYSTEM SERVICE INTRODUCED AT ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, NOV. 10, 1951". Over the dial on the 302 phone on the cover is a decal of a map outline of the Continental USA, in white, and *embossed* with a "relief" of rivers and mountains! Printed in red over this map is "A NATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS".] [Page 1] Historic "First" This is your personal copy of a special booklet prepared for your use during the trial of *dialing* of long distance telephone calls -- first of its kind in the Nation. This booklet contains information you need to obtain the fast service the direct-dialing method provides. For long distance dialing, the United States is divided into "Telephone Areas"--see map on page 6. Each Area is identified by its own numerical Code, and the Areas to which you can dial direct are shown on this map. To reach a distant telephone, all you need do is first dial the Area Code, and then the desired telephone number. Your connection is then made automatically, in a matter of seconds, by mechanical switching apparatus. We suggest that you transfer to this booklet entries from your present telephone number list. *Be sure to enter the Area Code for distant points with the telephone number*. The speed and accuracy of long distance dialing is a far-reaching development of the telephone art. It is one more long stride in keeping the telephone abreast of the swift change in American life, in which a vast nation is becoming one great neighborhood. Calling by Number is More Important Now! Only when you know the distant number, and can dial it yourself, do you get the full benefit of direct long distance dialing. Please keep the booklet handy near your telephone. [Page 2] [At the top of the page, there is a map of the Continental USA, with a WECO model 302 desk phone, and a sketch of a man's hand reaching over the map, towards the telephone, as if to lift the handset to place a call.] CONTENTS How to Call PAGES New Jersey ......................... 3 New York City ...................... 3 All Other Points ................... 4 Information Calls .................... 4 Wrong Numbers, etc. .................. 5 Map of Areas to Be Directly Dialed ... 6 Localities You Can Dial Direct ....... 8 Personal Number List ................. 20 [Page 3] NEW JERSEY AND NEW YORK CITY CALLS (from individual and two-party telephones served by ENglewood 3 & 4, and TEaneck 7 central offices) For New Jersey points listed in Index (see Index tab "NJ", page 8): On calls which you can already dial direct, continue as at present: Dial the first two letters of the central office name and the five numerals of the number. For example, to reach PErth-amboy 4-9970, dial PE-4-9970. For New Jersey points NOT listed in Index: Station-to-station calls, dial "0"--Operator Person-to-person calls, dial "211"--Long Distance For New York City calls (see Index tab "NYC", pps. 9-10): First dial the New York City Code "1-1", then the first two letters of the central office name, and the five numerals of the number. For example, to reach PLaza 5-9970, dial 11-PL-5-9970. ON CALLS TO ANY OF THE ABOVE POINTS: If you need assistance, dial "0"--Operator If you don't know the number, dial "411"--Information. [a box at the bottom of the page now follows] ON ALL CALLS: o First listen for "DIAL TONE"--*a steady hum* o Give the called party time to answer: wait at least one minute--ten rings--after ringing begins o If you hear the busy signal *(rapid buzz-buzz)* it may mean either that the called telephone is busy, or that the trunk lines are busy. Hang up and try your call a little later. [Pages 4-5] LONG DISTANCE CALLS o STATION-TO-STATION calls to points not listed in the index-- o PERSON-TO-PERSON long distance calls-- o COLLECT (reversed charges) CALLS, or if you wish to know the charges immediately at the end of a call, or wish to be notified at a particular time: Dial "211"--Long Distance--and give her the call. DIAL DIRECT TO ALL LOCALITIES IN THE LONG DISTANCE INDEX (pages 11-18) AS FOLLOWS: First determine from the Index the Area Code of the place you wish to call, a three-digit number. For example, if you wish to reach COpley 8-9970 in Boston see Index tab "Bost". The Area Code is shown as 617. Dial the Area Code, the first two letters of the central office name, and the five numerals of the number. For example, dial 617-CO-8-9970 IF YOU KNOW THE NUMBER BUT ARE UNCERTAIN OF THE FIRST TWO LETTERS OF THE CENTRAL OFFICE NAME (i.e., does "SChuyler" begin with SC or SK?), dial "211" and ask the Long Distance operator about the spelling. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE NUMBER of a telephone in an Area listed in the Index, dial "211"--Long Distance. Tell her "I want a number in Detroit, Mich.," for example. When the operator tells you the number, hang up for a moment, then dial the Area Code and telephone number as outlined above. BE SURE TO ENTER THE NUMBER *AND THE AREA CODE* IN THIS BOOKLET FOR FUTURE USE. IF YOU REACH OR DIAL A WRONG NUMBER, REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY Try to learn the name of the place and telephone number you have reached. Then hang up, dial "211" IMMEDIATELY and tell the Long Distance operator what has happened. *Do this at once, to avoid having the charge for this call appear on your bill.* IF YOU ARE CUT OFF, or transmission is poor, or you are unable to get a connection through after several attempts, dial "211" and ask the Long Distance operator to help you. IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE WHILE DIALING--if your finger slips as you dial, or you find you are dialing a wrong number, hang up at once. Wait a moment, then dial again. Dial the complete number--Area Code, then the first two letters of the central office name, and the five numerals of the number. THERE IS NO CHARGE UNLESS YOU REACH THE DISTANT TELEPHONE. IF THE NUMBER YOU CALL HAS BEEN CHANGED: Usually when a number has been changed or disconnected, your call will reach an operator. THERE IS NO CHARGE ON SUCH A CALL. However, if the number has been changed and later re-assigned to another party, you will reach the new party instead of an operator. If this happens, BE SURE TO REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY TO LONG DISTANCE (DIAL "211") AS OUTLINED ABOVE. *This avoids having the charge for this call appear on your bill.* *For fastest service* ALWAYS CALL BY NUMBER WHEN YOU CAN. [Pages 6-7 is a map of the Continental USA, including the southern Canadian border provinces. All of the state/province lines are shown. For multi-NPA states and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec which did have two area codes each in 1951, the NPA boundary lines are also shown as they existed at that time. However, there are *NO* area codes indicated in the NPA regions on the map, *EXCEPT* for the handful of customer dialable cities/metro areas, along with the city name. There were 90 NPA codes in in 1951; 91 if you include the temporary use of 318 for San Francisco in 1951. There is also an inset map for New York City metro, which indicates ENGLEWOOD (there is NO indication of the 201 area code for New Jersey, as it wasn't dialed, although it did exist since 1947), N.Y. CITY (1-1 is shown as the dialing code and not area code 212, although it too did exist since 1947), NASSAU COUNTY (516), WESTCHESTER & ROCKLAND COUNTIES- also parts of Orange and Putnam Counties (914). The text on the map page reads:] Areas of the United States to which you can directly dial Station-to-Station calls. Dial the Area Code, then the first two letters of the central office name, and the five numerals of the telephone number. No Area Code needed on New Jersey calls dialed direct to points listed in Index tab "NJ". [Beginning on page eight, and continuing on, there are lists for each city or metro area, of dialable Exchange names *or* communities in that metro area. Each even number (left) page has written across the top: "CALL BY NUMBER WHEN YOU CAN ... IT'S FASTER", while each odd number (right) page has written across the top: "Give the called party time to answer ... wait a full minute: ten rings". Dialable Central Office Exchange names are shown for New Jersey and for New York City. For all remaining locations (including Nassau County and Westchester/Rockland Counties), only the city, town and community names are indicated, without actual "2L" EXchange names.] [Page 8] New Jersey Dialing Area [Index Tab "NJ/NYC" on page 9] For calls to points listed below, dial direct as you would on a local call--first two letters of the central office name, and then the five numerals of the telephone number. There is further text at the bottom of the back cover:] If you have any comments or questions about your telephone service, please call us at the Business Office -- dial "811." ------------------------------- Long Distance dialing has come a long way in the past forty-five years. And rates have come down in price as well, and considering how much a dollar was worth in 1951. IMO, though, rates *should* come down even lower, as the actual *COST* of *providing* long-distance voice and data is minimal. We can now dial most every ITU assigned country code, but not necessarily every location or exchange in a dialable country. Even with the NANP, there are still a large number of manual ringdown locations, although they *are* quite rural and remote. MARK J.
