By M. Moon Microsoft has released Skype version 8.80, and it comes with the ability to make 911 calls if you're in the US. As first noticed by XDA Developers, the app's release notes list its new emergency calling support in the United States for both PC and mobile. In addition to being able to dial emergency services for you, the app can also automatically detect and share your location with emergency operators. https://www.engadget.com/skype-911-calls-united-states-162112469.html -- (Please remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

Some vehicles just need a software or hardware upgrade, but others-including vehicles from Chrysler, Dodge, Hyundai, Jeep, Lexus, Nissan, Ram, and Toyota-will lose their connections permanently. Automatic crash notification, which alerts first responders after a crash via a built-in cellular connection, often relies on aging 3G cellular networks to connect drivers with emergency services and share a vehicle's location. Even though automakers have been aware that these networks are shutting down permanently between February and July, many manufacturers still relied on it until as recently as the 2021 model year. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-safety/3g-wireless-network-shutdown-impact-on-car-safety-a2215482633/ -- (Please remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)

The site includes multiple pointers to resources and information, including possible work-arounds for those with 3G devices that have WiFi or other "bypass" capability. There are numerous fear-based stories circulating, predicting the end of the world as we know it, loss of life, plagues of locusts, and halitosis for those whom aren't willing to spend the money needed to avoid the possibility of not being able to make the cellular industry a few extra billion. Here's a statement from the FCC:
If your mobile phone is more than a few years old, you may need to upgrade your device before your mobile provider shuts down its 3G network, to avoid losing service. For more information on your mobile providers' plans for 3G retirement and how you can prepare, contact your provider directly. What is happening? Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks, which rely on older technology, to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. As a result, many older cell phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services. This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice). https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/plan-ahead-phase-out-3g-cellular-networks-and-service -- (Please remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly)
