Baig, AARP, October 25, 2021 Most every mobile service provider pitch you come across nowadays screams 5G, shorthand for the fifth generation of wireless rolling out across the country. While you can't blame the carriers for wanting to usher in the next era in wireless, millions of people, including many older adults, still rely on phones and other devices that tap into 3G, the third-generation networks that debuted in 2002. The 4G networks that came after have been around more than a decade. https://www.aarp.org/home-family/personal-technology/info-2021/phone-companies-ending-3g-service.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** Full disclosure: I am a member of AARP. The petition for emergency relief requests the FCC act to delay the planned shutdown of AT&T's 3G wireless network in February 2022 because security, fire, and personal medical alert systems all rely upon it to function. Because of COVID-19, the alarm industry has not been able to upgrade these systems to function on modern wireless networks. Without intervention from the FCC, the shutdown of AT&T's 3G network threatens to leave some unknown number of alarm systems inoperable. In addition, an unsupervised shutdown of 3G systems by major carriers nationwide puts the phone service of millions of Americans - many of them elderly or low-income - at risk. https://www.publicknowledge.org/press-release/public-knowledge-calls-on-fcc-to-oversee-3g-sunset/

With 5G service expanding rapidly, wireless carriers are planning on retiring 2G and 3G networks to free up spectrum for this new generation of service. We want to provide some consumer tips to help affected customers transition to new devices, which you may have already heard from your operator as many providers have been emailing, texting, and sending letters to customers over the past few months to help them prepare. Customer service support is on hand to help you make the switch to a 4G- or 5G-ready device. Read on for more information on this transition and to learn what it means for you. https://www.ctia.org/what-to-know-about-the-sunsetting-of-2g-3g-networks-in-preparation-for-5g

For more information on your mobile providers' plans for 3G retirement and how you can prepare, contact your provider directly. What is happening? Mobile carriers are shutting down their 3G networks, which rely on older technology, to make room for more advanced network services, including 5G. As a result, many older cell phones will be unable to make or receive calls and texts, including calls to 911, or use data services. This will affect 3G mobile phones and certain older 4G mobile phones that do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE or HD Voice). https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/plan-ahead-phase-out-3g-cellular-networks-and-service
