According to a report from MPD, 9-1-1 may not be available in some areas of Marion and the phone service provider, CenturyLink, is working to re-establish service to the impacted areas. https://www.thegazette.com/subject/news/public-safety/marion-911-phone-outage-police-emergency-number-20200104 -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <qv2pjs$2khe$1@grapevine.csail.mit.edu> Date: 7 Jan 2020 20:27:40 +0000 From: "Garrett Wollman" <wollman@bimajority.org> Subject: Re: VZW CDMA Network Retirement In article <0F7A7F08-07FD-49BD-AE8D-443B24C99B2D@roscom.com>, Monty Solomon <monty@roscom.com> quoted a Verizon web page: >We are moving all devices to our HD Voice LTE network, which offers >superior coverage and performance compared to previous generation >networks. Starting January 1, 2020, Verizon will no longer allow any >CDMA (3G and 4G Non-HD Voice) 'Like-for-Like' device changes. > >Caution Currently, 3G / 4G non-HD Voice CDMA devices can't be >activated for any new line of service. It had previously been announced (and posted in this newsgroup) that Verizon's IS-2000 network would be turned down at the end of 2019. Later it was announced that they were postponing the shutdown until the end of 2020. Presumably they found out that a lot more of their commercial customers had IS-2000 devices that were not about to be upgraded. I have an old EndRun Technologies CDMA timecode receiver that I'll be sad to shut off when Verizon finally does get around to turning down CDMA service. We don't have roof access so it's the only way to get submillisecond-accurate UTC in our machine rooms. -GAWollman -- Garrett A. Verizon's LTE voice service is technically compatible with other US carriers, but that doesn't mean they'll let you roam on their networks. All recent Verizon phones are supposed to be unlocked due to a condition on one of their frequency bands, so if you pop the Verizon SIM out of your phone and put in a SIM from another carrier, it'll work. I do this all the time. This isn't the case with Verizon resellers like Comcast, who lock phones in the usual way and will only unlock them once you've paid off the contract. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <08256BFA-D927-4667-AC60-7BB06791CB3F@roscom.com> Date: 7 Jan 2020 20:43:38 -0500 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Inside the Billion-Dollar Battle Over .Org Inside the Billion-Dollar Battle Over .Org A private equity firm wants to buy the internet domain used by nonprofits. A group of online pioneers says it is not the place to maximize profits. Two months ago, Ethos Capital, a private equity firm, announced that it planned to buy the rights to a tract of internet real estate for more than $1 billion. But it wasn't just any piece of digital property. It was dot-org, the cyber neighborhood that is home to big nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations like the United Nations (un.org) and NPR (npr.org), and to little ones like neighborhood clubs. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/07/technology/dot-org-private-equity-battle.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** ...
