Shreveport filed suit against telecom giant Centurylink Communications for franchise fees. The city has an agreement with CenturyLink dating back to 2002. But the city claimed no fees have been paid. The suit was filed during the Ollie Tyler administration and Caddo District Court Judge Craig Marcotte has just ruled in favor of the city. Shreveport wins $6.7 million dollars. But the City will not likely see any of this cash any time soon, because CenturyLink is expected to appeal to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. https://710keel.com/shreveport-wins-multi-million-dollar-lawsuit/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200206234252.GA30299@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2020 23:42:52 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Marathon Co., WI officials say long-term solution needed for people unable to call 911 during phone outages WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Marathon County officials say a long-term fix is needed for residents affected by extended Frontier phone service outages in the county. Frontier Communications, representatives from Sen. Tammy Baldwin's office, and stakeholders in the phone and cell industries have been invited to attend a March infrastructure meeting to address the problem of residents who say they are left unable to call 911 in an emergency for weeks at a time when their landlines go down. In terms of long-term solutions, board members say the county-funded broadband plan unveiled by Design Nine last month will be a key focus moving forward. The report, which found large portions of the county as "unserved" or "underserved" by high-speed internet under Federal Communications Commission definitions, included plans to reach between 89 and 100% of the county with broadband in the next five to ten years. https://www.wsaw.com/content/news/Marathon-Co-officials-say-long-term-solution-needed-for-people-unable-to-call-911-during-phone-outages-567626411.html -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200206233501.GA30198@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2020 23:35:01 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Commissioners 'ashamed' of CenturyLink after 911 system outage in Page, AZ By: Claudia Rupcich PAGE, AZ - Members of the Arizona Corporation Commission told CenturyLink the company has about a month to fix service issues in Page before they take the next step that could lead to legal action against the company. According to Page's city manager, there have been several outages in the city and surrounding areas in the past few months. In January, an outage took down all the landlines and the city's 911 system for 20 hours, according to Page Chief of Police Drew Sanders. https://www.abc15.com/news/state/commissioners-ashamed-of-centurylink-after-911-system-outage-in-page -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Fri, 07 Feb 2020
