Note: CenturyLink services were restored to some islanders on Tuesday afternoon, after this article was written. By Olivia Cameron Last week, local complaints concerning the lack of internet service in Boca Grande stretched on for over seven days. Those who were hooked up to CenturyLink noticed the shortage but were unsure why the problem remained unsolved. CenturyLink has confirmed that a fiber cut affected the internet in the area. The cut had directly interrupted service, and technicians had since been working to resolve the technical difficulty. When work is conducted near underground wires, it can be difficult to work around them if they are labeled inaccurately. https://bocabeacon.com/wordpress/news/a-week-and-still-no-internet-century-link-down-but-why/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200620161454.GA22361@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sat, 20 Jun 2020 16:14:54 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Digital publisher owned by Hearst and Verizon accused of racism, misogyny By Keith J. Kelly A pop culture digital publisher owned by Hearst and Verizon is the latest company to be blasted as hypocritical after declaring public support for nationwide racial injustice protests. Complex Networks, which runs music, pop-culture, shopping and food sites, was slammed Friday as "not a safe space" for women or minorities to work by former staffer Tiffany Wines, who complained about a bullying boss and drug-laced cookies. https://nypost.com/2020/06/19/complex-networks-accused-of-having-racist-misogynistic-workplace/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200621155803.GA26860@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sun, 21 Jun 2020 15:58:03 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: NSA launches 'Secure DNS' By Tim Starks | 06/19/2020 10:00 AM EDT Updated 06/19/2020 06:54 PM EDT With help from Eric Geller, Martin Matishak, Laurens Cerulus and Daniel Lippman The NSA recently launched a pilot program to bolster the U.S. defense industrial base against malware, the head of the agency's Cyber- security Directorate said Thursday. The effort to secure a group of defense contractors' Domain Name System protocols, dubbed "Secure DNS," started six weeks ago with the intention of learning whether it's a model that can "jumpstart their security, particularly for smaller- and medium-sized companies that may not have the ability to invest the resources or the right-skilled personnel," Anne Neuberger said during Defense One's Tech Summit. "We know they're targets because they're building weapons technology for the department." https://www.politico.com/newsletters/morning-cybersecurity/2020/06/19/nsa-launches-secure-dns-788668 -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <rcmc15$qpj$1@reader1.panix.com> Date: 21 Jun 2020 01:09:57 +0000 From: "Paul W. It used to be a bank. After that, it provided office space for attorneys and accountants. But now it's a meeting place for dozens of telephone carriers and Internet services, and by extension, millions of people each day. The building is a sort of data center's data center, a neutral spot not owned by any single carrier or service provider, that serves as a hub for CenturyLink, Cox Communications, US Internet, Verizon Wireless, regional data centers and dozens of other companies. A subsidiary, Omaha IX, which also is based in the building, serves Google, Facebook, Netflix and others. The building is undergoing a $40 million renovation to more capably serve as a key interconnection site in the Midwest, from which data can flow in any direction."
