The UK government's decision on whether to allow Huawei to operate 'non-core' parts of the country's telecom network is expected within weeks. By Adam Smith UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has asked critics of Huawei, with regards to the company's 5G infrastructure, what the alternative is to using the company's equipment in an interview with the BBC. As quoted in The Guardian, the Prime Minister said, "The British public deserve to have access to the best possible technology. We want to put in gigabit broadband for everybody. Now if people oppose one brand or another then they have to tell us what's the alternative." https://www.pcmag.com/news/373014/uk-prime-minister-to-huawei-critics-whats-the-alternative -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200114162222.GA10597@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2020 16:22:22 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: After spending $841,000 last year on receptions and events for Tennessee lawmakers, businesses and groups are ready for 2020 By Andy Sher NASHVILLE - After spending a record-breaking $841,000 last year on receptions and events for Tennessee lawmakers, state business, advocacy and nonprofit groups are ready for Tuesday's start of the General Assembly's 2020 session. It begins late Tuesday afternoon with AT&T, joined by Vanderbilt University, Bristol Motorway and Southwest Airlines, hosting a reception for the 33 senators and 99 representatives at the Tennessee State Museum. https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/local/story/2020/jan/13/after-spending-841000-last-year-tennessee-leg/512904/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200114161912.GA10565@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2020 16:19:12 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Public TV Stations Push FCC to Mandate FirstNet Datacasting Interoperability APTS says AT&T, FirstNet have not been open to 'serious discussions.' By John Eggerton Public TV stations say they have been trying to get FirstNet and the carrier whose network it is running on, AT&T, to make the broadband first responder communications network interoperable with broadcast datacasting, made possible thanks to ATSC 3.0, but with no luck so far. https://www.broadcastingcable.com/news/public-tv-stations-push-fcc-to-mandate-firstnet-interoperability -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <02F7E3A3-79AB-4E0D-A335-53A73D0DC2A2@roscom.com> Date: 13 Jan 2020 20:16:00 -0500 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: New SIM Swap Hacks Highlight Carriers' Wobbly Security By Martha Degrasse Several new studies have found that hackers can convince wireless carriers' customer service agents to port legitimate phone numbers to bogus accounts -- a practice that can then open that account up to fraud and theft. Researchers at Princeton University called three of the four major carriers and tried to convince customer service representatives to move phone numbers to new SIM cards. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile each received ten calls from the researchers, who posed as customers. https://www.lightreading.com/new-sim-swap-hacks-highlight-carriers-wobbly-security/d/d-id/756780 ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200114180324.GA11349@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2020 18:03:24 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Ahead of Windows 7's death, you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free - here's how to get it By Matt Hanson While Microsoft's offer of free Windows 10 upgrades officially expired years ago, there is still a way you can upgrade to the latest opera- ting system in time for Windows 7's End of Life expiry date on January 14. Not only does this mean you can get Windows 10 without paying $120 for the upgrade, but it's also (sort of) legit, as Microsoft apparently knows of the loophole and wants people to use it, as the company would rather see people upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, even if that means it doesn't get money from the upgrades. https://www.techradar.com/news/ahead-of-windows-7s-death-you-can-still-upgrade-to-windows-10-for-free-heres-how-to-get-it -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Wed, 15 Jan 2020
