By Maddy Varne Mass protests have broken out across the United States after a Minneapolis police officer killed black Minnesotan George Floyd while he was in police custody. One thing demonstrators should be aware of before they head out is that their cellphones may subject them to surveillance tactics by law enforcement. If your cellphone is on and unsecured, not only can your location be tracked, but your messages and the content of your phone may also be retrieved by police either if they take custody of your phone or later by warrant or subpoena. https://www.fastcompany.com/90513609/how-do-i-prepare-my-phone-for-a-protest -- Bill Horne ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200606214940.GA8347@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sat, 6 Jun 2020 21:49:40 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: The Biggest Leaks Revealed by Edward Snowden A breakdown of the leaks provided by the former CIA employee, Edward Snowden, who spent time working with the NSA and shared highly classified information. By Bill Mann When 2013 began, the general public had no idea who Edward Joseph Snowden was, but by the end of the year, everyone knew his name. Snowden, a former CIA employee who spent time working with the NSA, decided to share highly classified information with several leading journalists, who then broke the news to the world. https://blokt.com/guides/edward-snowden-leaks -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <403CD26C-B1C0-40D5-8BD1-4E1AEF2F7227@roscom.com> Date: 6 Jun 2020 07:35:22 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: The Complex Debate Over Silicon Valley's Embrace of Content Moderation The Complex Debate Over Silicon Valley's Embrace of Content Moderation Many in tech cheered when Twitter added labels to President Trump's tweets. But civil libertarians caution that social media companies are moving into uncharted waters. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/05/technology/twitter-trump-facebook-moderation.html ***** Moderator's Note ***** "Uncharted waters?" Oh, Saints Preserve Us! We're sailing off the edge of the world! But, on second thought, I think not. "Moderation," in all senses of the word, has been a cornerstone of online debate since before the start of the Internet and before Usenet existed: this publication is only one example. A wise woman once told me that everything I see on TV is never what really happened. I think that also applies to alarminst newspaper stories claiming that "civil libertarians" might not want to disrupt the incredible cash flow of the anti-social hype-machines run by powerful conglomerates, and introduce (No, Lord, I'll Do Anything!) a note of sanity or a soupçon of balance into the electronic spectacle they brand as "Social Media." Sorry, Dorothy, but they're never letting you go back to Kansas: the lecherous touch of the ever-so-oozy hand on your wallet is neither social nor "media:" just a vehicle by which foreign nations corrupt our presidential elections, by which hucksters and gladhanders and influence peddlers strive to put mommy's credit card into the hands of over-stimulated and unsophisticated pre-pubescent teenagers, and by which a brain-dead braggart seeks to prolong his tenure as the third barracks emperor during the second fall of Rome.
