Since 2015, CenturyLink has received $505.7 million each year from the US government's Connect America Fund to deploy Internet service to nearly 1.2 million homes and businesses in 33 states. CenturyLink was required to complete 80 percent of that deployment by the end of 2019 but recently told the Federal Communications Commission that it did not meet the end-of-2019 deadline in 23 of the 33 states. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/05/centurylinks-slow-broadband-deployment-gets-even-slower-in-pandemic/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200506154128.GA15915@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 6 May 2020 15:41:28 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: OpenRAN The OpenRAN Project Group is an initiative to define and build 2G, 3G and 4G RAN solutions based on a general-purpose vendor-neutral hardware and software-defined technology. Technologies This project group's main objective is the development of fully programmable RAN solutions based on General Purpose Processing Platforms (GPPP) and disaggregated software so they can benefit from the flexibility and faster pace of innovation capable with software-driven development. https://telecominfraproject.com/openran/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200506153407.GA15832@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 6 May 2020 15:34:07 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Alphabet's Loon partners with AT&T to extend network coverage during disasters The Loon system was integrated with AT&T's network, giving Loon the ability to serve AT&T customers more quickly if traditional communications infrastructure was unexpectedly wiped out. By Natalie Gagliordi Loon, the former Google X project and now independent Alphabet company, has formed a network partnership with AT&T that will make it easier for Loon to provide internet connectivity through its high-altitude broadband balloons over disaster zones. Under the partnership, the Loon system was integrated with AT&T's network, giving Loon the ability to serve AT&T customers more quickly if traditional communications infrastructure was unexpectedly wiped out. https://www.zdnet.com/article/alphabets-loon-partners-with-at-t-to-extend-network-coverage-during-disasters/ -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20200506154444.GA15938@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Wed, 6 May 2020 15:44:44 +0000 From: Moderator <telecomdigestsubmissions@remove-this.telecom-digest.org> Subject: AT&T, Verizon part of new 31-member Open RAN Policy Coalition by Bevin Fletcher A new coalition, backed by a wide range of players in the mobile ecosystem, including U.S. operators AT&T and Verizon, has formed to advocate for government policy that helps drive open RAN adoption. https://www.fiercewireless.com/regulatory/at-t-verizon-among-new-31-member-open-ran-policy-coalition -- Bill Horne Telecom Digest Moderator ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Thu, 07 May 2020
