Well after most New Yorkers had gone to bed, a crew of Verizon workers was on the streets of the city early Tuesday morning getting ready to work on utility lines buried beneath the asphalt. At around 3:15 a.m., they stood in a usually traffic-choked intersection in Midtown Manhattan and removed the manhole cover separating them from the task at hand, officials said. When the manhole was exposed, the workers were hit by a putrid smell, they told a local news outlet. After descending, they were shocked to discover the source of the odor: a decaying corpse. <https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/15/nyregion/nyc-manhole-body-homeless.html> [The NY Times stylebook has not caught up, I see. "Manhole" is no longer used; "Maintenance Hatchway" is the new gender-neutral norm.] Worth mentioning that the duct system in Manhattan and The Bronx is owned by Empire City Subway <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_City_Subway> but that is now controlled by VZ. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20191015003306.GA26333@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2019 00:33:06 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: AT&T is Abandoning Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands Just weeks after billionaire CEO Paul Singer's Elliott Management Corporation announced that it had acquired about 1% of AT&T and laid out plans to extract profits from the company by cutting jobs and selling off critical assets, AT&T announced its intention to sell off wireless and wireline operations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to Liberty Latin America, a company with a history of union-busting and job cuts. https://cwa-union.org/news/releases/att-abandoning-puerto-rico-and-us-virgin-islands -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Thu, 17 Oct 2019
