The incident comes after two cities in Florida were hit with ransomware attacks and decided to pay up. By Michael Kan A New York City-based college has been hit with a ransomware attack, and hackers are demanding the school pay roughly $2 million in bitcoin to free the infected computers. The attack struck Monroe College on Wednesday morning, causing its main website and email system to go down, according to The New York Daily News. https://www.pcmag.com/news/369510/ransomware-attackers-demand-2-million-from-nyc-college -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <5fb31986-f618-4b68-a450-bb867ed5a596@googlegroups.com> Date: 13 Jul 2019 12:05:53 -0700 From: HAncock4 <withheld@invalid.telecom-digest.org> Subject: Robocall scammers targeting victims using their personal data The Phila Inqr reported that criminals are leveraging the massive data breaches that have rocked major companies by using the exposed customer information to target consumers directly, a new report says. full article at: https://www.inquirer.com/business/first-orion-robocall-spoofing-scam-business-data-breach-20190711.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <2A396598-3788-47BA-9685-61EE9DF38C46@roscom.com> Date: 14 Jul 2019 11:24:08 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: T-Mobile says its T&Cs prevent customers from suing over sale of location data T-Mobile says its T&Cs prevent customers from suing over sale of location data Remember a couple of months ago when we learned that T-Mobile and the other major U.S. carriers were hit with a class action lawsuit related to the sale of customer location data? Now T-Mobile has responded to the suit against it, saying that its customers can't sue. T-Mobile has argued that the customers involved in the location data class action lawsuit can't sue T-Mo because of the terms and conditions that they agreed to. "By accepting these T&Cs, you are agreeing to resolve any dispute with us through binding arbitration or small claims dispute procedures (unless you opt out), and to waive your rights to a jury trial and to participate in any class action suit," T-Mobile's Terms and Conditions reads. https://www.tmonews.com/2019/07/t-mobile-customers-cant-sue-location-data-sales/ T-Mobile says it can't be sued by users because of forced-arbitration clause T-Mobile US is trying to force customers into arbitration in order to avoid a class-action lawsuit that accuses the phone carrier of violating federal law by selling its customers' real-time location data to third parties. T-Mobile yesterday filed a motion to compel arbitration in US District Court in Maryland, saying that customers agreed to terms and conditions that require disputes to be handled in arbitration instead of courts. The two plaintiffs named in the lawsuit did not opt out of the arbitration agreement, T-Mobile wrote. "You may opt out of these arbitration procedures by calling 1-866-323-4405 or online at https://www.t-mobiledisputeresolution.com/en " https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/07/t-mobile-demands-forced-arbitration-to-avoid-lawsuit-over-selling-users-data/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190713181357.GA4002@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2019 18:13:57 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: "Camelot on the Moon" (Thanks to Tom Lapp for his suggestion to feature this story - Bill) The real story of how we managed to fulfill [President] Kennedy's promise and put a man on the moon.
