Between the technology's lofty economic potential and the security concerns that it raises, you are bound to have heard something about it in the news. Despite all this coverage, and 5G's power to reshape the world around us and how we communicate, public literacy about 5G and why it matters remains remarkably low. http://www.mondaq.com/article.asp?articleid=819476&email_access=on -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <0F220CFF-D78F-468A-82CA-9E952AA62D99@roscom.com> Date: 2 Jul 2019 16:31:25 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: China Snares Tourists' Phones in Surveillance Dragnet by Adding Secret App Border authorities routinely install the app on the phones of people entering the Xinjiang region by land from Central Asia, gathering personal data and scanning for material considered objectionable. By Raymond Zhong BEIJING - China has turned its western region of Xinjiang into a police state with few modern parallels, employing a combination of high-tech surveillance and enormous manpower to monitor and subdue the area's predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities. Now, the digital dragnet is expanding beyond Xinjiang's residents, ensnaring tourists, traders and other visitors - and digging deep into their smartphones. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/02/technology/china-xinjiang-app.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <374AFD5E-F5EC-48FC-B1C0-0C21FE435955@roscom.com> Date: 2 Jul 2019 10:29:01 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: FCC lets Verizon lock cell phones to network for 60 days after activation Verizon, seeking to deter theft, gets FCC waiver to lock phones for 60 days. By Jon Brodkin Verizon yesterday received the government's permission to lock handsets to its network for 60 days after each device's activation, despite open-access rules that apply to one of Verizon's key spectrum licenses. The Federal Communications Commission waiver approval said 60-day locks will "allow Verizon to better combat identity theft and other forms of handset-related fraud." https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/06/fcc-lets-verizon-lock-cell-phones-to-network-for-60-days-after-activation/ ------------------------------ Message-ID: <3A85A558-C8EC-49A3-A985-30F2AEC8E914@roscom.com> Date: 2 Jul 2019 10:25:41 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: House votes to block Ajit Pai's attempt to preempt San Francisco's broadband law he US House of Representatives has voted to block Ajit Pai's attempt to kill a San Francisco ordinance designed to promote broadband competition in apartment buildings. As we reported last week, the Federal Communications Commission chair has scheduled a July 10 vote on a measure that would preempt the San Francisco city ordinance, which lets Internet service providers use the existing wiring inside multiunit residential and commercial properties even if the wiring is already used by another ISP that serves the building. The ordinance applies only when the inside wiring belongs to the property owner, but it makes it easier for ISPs to compete in many multiunit buildings already served by another provider. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/06/house-votes-to-block-ajit-pais-plan-to-kill-san-francisco-broadband-law/ ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Thu, 04 Jul 2019
