Carney, Allison C. Binney, Donald R. Pongrace and Elizabeth C. Rosen Key Points: * On June 3, 2019, a federal court in New Hampshire ruled in favor of a New Hampshire state agency in concluding that "the text, context, and structure of the Wire Act" limit the Act's applicability to sports gambling and no other types of gambling. * The New Hampshire Lottery Commission commenced the lawsuit in February 2019, shortly after the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) released a new opinion interpreting the Wire Act to include nonsports-related gambling. * Although the government may appeal the decision, for now, it preserves the status quo that the DOJ set under the Obama administration. http://www.mondaq.com/article.asp?articleid=816864&email_access=on -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190625202951.GA2296@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2019 20:29:51 +0000 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Outage in Netherlands knocks out emergency services for hours Officials have ruled out a cyber attack. By Amrita Khalid The Dutch were given a frightening lesson about society's reliance on technology. A major telecommunications outage knocked Netherland's version of 911 offline for a few hours on Monday, reported Reuters. The outage originated on Royal KPN's network and impacted both landlines and mobile phones. It's unclear what caused the event, though KPN has ruled out a security breach. The network went offline at around 3:45 pm in the Netherlands, and was restored roughly four hours later. https://www.engadget.com/2019/06/24/outage-in-netherlands-knocks-out-emergency-services-for-hours/ -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <5184DE55-1CBD-45D0-8111-AF2F8A0E1B79@roscom.com> Date: 23 Jun 2019 22:15:03 -0400 From: "Monty Solomon" <monty@roscom.com> Subject: Want the Robocalls to Stop? Congress Does, Too https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/20/us/politics/stopping-robocalls.html A bipartisan bill introduced by House members would require phone carriers to offer screening technology to customers at no additional cost. ***** Moderator's Note ***** "Screening technology?" Someone, please tell me what, exactly, this technology does and how it supposedly accomplishes the stated goals. Please hurry: it's almost an election year, and I need to build up my tolerance for - um - disingenuity.
