"If I now occupy beachfront real estate in our competitors' heads, that makes me smile," AT&T Communications CEO John Donovan said during an appearance on stage at CES today. Donovan was responding to criticism from Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint over AT&T's decision to update some of its phones to display an icon that reads "5G E" instead of "LTE" when connected to faster pockets of its 4G LTE network. The icon refers to "5G Evolution," which is how AT&T is branding those portions of its 4G network - despite there being no actual 5G technology involved. The icon isn't appearing on 5G phones, either. AT&T just took existing LTE phones and essentially slapped a fake 5G label on them. https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/9/18175566/att-communications-ceo-fake-5g-e-complaints-response-ces-2019 -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190110183505.GA5201@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2019 13:35:05 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: CenturyLink CEO: Outage Could Have Been Bigger By Phil Harvey CenturyLink's network outage in December would have been much worse if the carrier's patchwork quilt of acquisitions and regional networks were fully integrated. That bit of reassurance came from Jeff Storey, CenturyLink's president and CEO, who spoke at the 2019 Citi Global TMT West Conference earlier this week in Las Vegas. https://www.lightreading.com/optical-ip/dwdm/centurylink-ceo-outage-could-have-been-bigger/d/d-id/748718?print=yes -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190110184219.GA5218@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2019 13:42:20 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Wasington AG Ferguson seeking 911 outage stories By Charles H. Featherstone OLYMPIA - Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson wants to hear from people affected by last month's nationwide 911 outage. Ferguson's request comes about three weeks after large portions of the United States' 911 system went down for 12 hours on Dec. 17 and 18. Much of that system is managed by Monroe, Louisiana-based CenturyLink. https://www.columbiabasinherald.com/local_news/20190110/ag_ferguson_seeking_911_outage_stories -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <20190110190649.GA5274@telecom.csail.mit.edu> Date: Thu, 10 Jan 2019 14:06:49 -0500 From: Bill Horne <bill@horneQRM.net> Subject: Missouri County weighs options as 911 tax hits prepaid cell phones By Craig Montgomery A new state sales tax on prepaid cellphones in Missouri to help fund 911 services may provide some welcome relief to Dent County, where a 911 surcharge on landlines is falling short. The tax took effect Jan. 1. The impact of the new tax isn't known yet, but it could help offset declining revenues from the 4 percent surcharge on CenturyLink landlines that once brought in $50,000 a year for 911 operations at the county sheriff's office. http://www.thesalemnewsonline.com/news/local_news/article_70436b7c-136b-11e9-b37c-7388e8d145a3.html -- Bill Horne (Remove QRM from my email address to write to me directly) ------------------------------ ********************************************* End of telecom Digest Fri, 11 Jan 2019
