Subject: Auction Web Site Offers Babies For Sale
Date: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 11:42:11 -0500

Shanghai police are investigating advertisements offering babies for
sale on a Chinese Web site owned by Internet auction power eBay, state
media said on Thursday.

The ads, which appeared on the Eachnet site on October 16, promised
babies under 100 days old from the impoverished central province of
Henan at prices of 28,000 yuan for boys and 13,000 yuan for girls, the
China Daily said.

More than 50 people browsed the posting but no purchases were made
before it was quickly removed.

The sale of children and women is a nationwide problem in China, where
stringent rules on family planning allow couples to just have one
child, at least in cities.

The restrictions have bolstered a traditional bias for male offspring,
seen as the mainstay for elderly parents, and have resulted in
abortions or killings of baby girls.

The ads, posted under the username of Chuangxinzhe Yongyuan, or
"forever innovator," claimed to be offering the infants to help
millions of couples around China unable to have children, the China
Daily said.

Tang Lei, from Shanghai-based Eachnet's corporate relations
department, said his company removed the posting quickly after it was
discovered and explained the word "baby" was not caught in automatic
screens for illegal content because of the large number of baby
products pitched on the site.

As a result of the incident, Tang told Reuters, the Web site was
planning to screen every posting.

The China Daily quoted Tang as saying the ad may have been a practical
joke.

"If not, whoever is behind the Chuangxinzhe Yongyuan username could
face years in prison or even the death sentence," the newspaper said.

Subject: Mom Arrested For Murder of Three Children; Blames Web Site
Date: Thu, 20 Oct 2005 11:42:39 -0500

By JORDAN ROBERTSON, Associated Press Writer

A woman who tossed her three young children off a pier into San
Francisco Bay near Fishermen's Wharf has been arrested, authorities
said Thursday, and the Coast Guard searched for the bodies of two of
the children.

The body of a third child was recovered Wednesday.

Lashaun Harris, 23, of Oakland, was booked on three counts of murder
and three counts of assault on a child with great bodily injury,
according to Susan Fahey, spokeswoman for the San Francisco Sheriff's
Department. Harris remained in custody early Thursday with no court
date set, she said. Harris' children were identified as Trayshaun
Harris, 6, Travante Greely, 2, and Joshua Harris, 1.

A child's body was found about four hours after a witness reported
seeing a woman drop the children into the bay near Pier 7, said
Jonathan Guerra of the Coast Guard. The body was not immediately
identified.

While rescuers searched for the children Wednesday night, an empty
stroller was visible on the pier. A small inflatable Coast Guard boat
hugged the water front as rescuers used hand-held flashlights to
search under the pier. Larger Coast Guard and San Francisco police
boats searched the water with high-powered flashlights.

Mayor Gavin Newsom who came to the scene to get briefed by
authorities, telling reporters, "I'm sick to my stomach," before
leaving, after hearing the evidence authorities presented.

Lashaun Harris told authorities that 'someone she chatted with on the
internet' had told her to throw her children into the water, the San
Francisco Chronicle reported. It was not immediately known whether
she had an attorney, nor who this person was who had told her to drown
her children.

Asia Powell, who identified herself as Harris' cousin, said Harris was
taking medicine for a mental illness.

"I know that she would never hurt her kids," she told KPIX-TV. "I know
that."

Harris had been staying with her children at a Salvation Army shelter
in Oakland, the Chronicle reported.

"I just talked to her yesterday," Mary Ann Ramirez, the shelter's
social services manager, told the newspaper Wednesday. "We had our
usual, 'How are you doing, how's the kids.' I would never have guessed
in a million years that today she would do that."

The pier is in the Embarcadero area, which draws tourists to the
historic Ferry Building within view of Coit Tower and the landmark
Transamerica pyramid. It's about a mile from Fishermen's Wharf.

Question: for postpay systems, what mechanism was used to respond to
the insertion of coins to turn on the transmitter? Was it merely the
detection of a coin falling through the mechanism tripping a relay
(presumably reset when the instrument goes on-hook), or was there
involvement by the CO (and wouldn't this be necessary if it was
possible to make long-distance calls from the phone)?

"Airplane!" was a send-up of the film version of the late Arthur
Hailey's 1968 book "Airport", which was made into a film by Universal
two years later. Google shows it as available on both VHS and DVD.

Interesting points. If IBT had a special easement above and beyond
the normal public utility one granted by law they would and should
have documentation to prove it. Likewise, the original seller of the
house had to convey clear title or describe in the deed any special
easements.

In my state, deeds for homes contain some standard boilerplate
prohibiting their use as a tannery or pig farm or other obnoxious uses
as well as granting easements for utilities. They may be also
convenants with the deed limiting certain uses or alterations. For
example, when Levittowns were built, owners were prohibited from
building fences or doing laundry on Sunday.

Most people don't read their deed or properly reserach the original
title of the property their buying or of the surrounding area. Most
deed convenants are very tightly binding and very difficult to
overturn. An exception was convenants that limited subsequent sale to
certain ethnicities; they have been voided by law.

As to the issue of conveying clear title, this is true, and certainly
the woman could sue the former owner if it turned out IBT in fact had
an easement that wasn't disclosed in the title. HOWEVER, there's two
old expressions in real estate: "you can't sue bricks" and "you can
sue me if you can find me". In other words, any questions should be
resolved before the property is purchased, not after because it's
damned hard too.

> I understand that uncontested use of a property will mature into
> permanent rights after some (forgotten) interval.
> I think the interval is 20 years for "adverse use" of property. Your
> mileage may vary.

Yes, that's true too. A common example is when a neighbor builds a
garage that happens to fall on your side of the property line. If you
don't about it or ignore it for the specified length of time, the
property line is shifted and becomes your neighbor's. Another example
is a college that has streets on its campus open to the public but are
actually private. Typically colleges close these streets once a year
and publish a notice to retain its ownership. Likewise for buildings
with sidewalks open to the public but are on private property.

The critical issue in real estate is to get everything in writing and
keep the papers permanently. If you're buying a property, make sure
the seller or agent answers all your questions in writing before you
sign for it.

Our complex got burned with the water company because we were sloppy
and didn't require a written record. The water company built a new
pipeline through our complex, which they had a legal right to do.
They met with us and promised to restore the area (light woodsy) and
plant lots of specified trees. But after construction they planted
_one_ cheap tree and refused to do any more (they did plant grass).
We had no written record of their committment and they denied it. Our
own damn stupidity.

FWIW, there's a weather recording for southern CT from WTNH in New
