Subject: Additions, Corrections to Areacode.c Script

Over the weekend I sent out the revised version of 'acreacode.c', a
script which matches areacodes with their geographic locations. To
test how well you read and how much attention you give to what I say,
I deliberatly left a few things out and stayed sort of vague on a
couple other things ... <grin> ... yeah, sure, you believe that don't
you ...

Here is the first round of corrections. Some should indeed be edited
into your copy of the script, while a couple others would probably
be nice cosmetically but are not absolutely required. Naturally when
you edit the script, you will then need to recompile it in order to
get the changes into the executable version.

One glaring omission, one new item:

How could you and Carl miss the 888 NPA? <grin>

And, here in Virginia, area code 757 is expected to open in 9/96, serving far
southeast Virginia (Williamsburg-Newport News-Norfolk); it's a spinoff from
the 804 NPA. [Richmond Times-Dispatch, 1/6/96]

When did this go into effect? I'm still using 305 to call there.

That must be a typo for "Oak Brook". Oak Park will stay in 708.

[TELECOM Digest Editor's Note: I then responded to David saying that
it was not a typo and that I had told Carl Moore to edit it that way.
I got a reply back from him as follows below. PAT]

You are under a misapprehension, Mr. Townson. If it weren't for the bad
driving conditions, I'd call you and ask to visit right now with my maps.
All of western Cook County south of O'Hare will stay in 708 except for

(1) Schiller Park and Franklin Park, which will go into 847;
(2) Lemont Township and the parts of Burr Ridge and Hinsdale in Cook County,
which will go into 630; and
(3) the piece of Rich Township that is currently in 815.

Harwood Heights, Norridge, Elmwood Park, Elk Grove Village, and all Cook
County suburbs south of North Avenue except Lemont will stay in 708. 708
will reach as far north as St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 5650 N. Canfield.
630 will not extend east of I-294.

In fact, your A-band from Skokie will reach into 708.

Just change "Oak Park" to "Oak Brook" and you'll be OK, or AOK, or maybe OAK.

In article <01.06.96.5yyk87e@massis.lcs.mit.edu> you write:

> "360Bellingham, Olympia and Vancouver, Washington",

Actually, '206' is "Greater Seattle", and '360' is "the rest of
Western Washington State". For example, Port Angeles is in 360,
despite being over a hundred miles from either Olympia or Bellingham
or Point Roberts.

> "604Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA",

Actually, 604, until 9/30/96 is *all* of B.C. After that date, 604 is
"Lower Mainland", e.g., north to Whistler and Powell River, south to
the border and east to Hope, in addition to Vancouver.

  Just a couple of corrections:
1. 503, I believe, still includes all areas of Oregon, not just Portland.

2. 916 includes all of North Central and North-East California from roughly
Elk Grove and Dixon in the extreme south to the Oregon border to the north
and includes, besides what you listed, Susanville, Alturas, Redding, Mt.
Shasta, etc. At the very least, you should include Redding and possibly
Susanville as well. Another wording would be something to the effect,
"north central/east California from Sacramento to Oregon border".

Subject: Area code Script 1996 Update

Mr. Townson,

As of 1-5-96 Bell Atlantic-Virginia announced there would be a new
area code for the tidewater area of Virginia. This would be the
Eastern Shore, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Williamsburg areas of the
state. The number chosen is 757.

I found a couple of bugs in your area code program.

As a dual citizen of Arizona and southern California
I will point out errors in my home towns.

213 is not Los Angeles! It is downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
The rest of Los Angeles is either 310 or 818 with 310 being
everything south of the San Fernando valley including West LA,
the South Bay, Long Beach and everything down to Orange County
where the 714 area code kicks in.

818 is the San Fernando valley part of Los Angeles (Van Nuys,
Chatsworth, etc) and the San Gabrial valley (Glendale, Pasadena,
    etc).

310 your program says this is Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills is 213
mixed with downtown Los Angeles. Local Slang calls people from
Beverly Hill's 213'er cuz they still have the 213 area code.
Again the 310 area code is generally everything in Los Angeles
County south of the San Fernando valley including West LA,
Santa Monica, Torrance, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach.

520 this is all of Arizona except the Phoenix area which is
    not just Flagstaff and Tucson.

602 this is the Phoenix area. Probably a better explanation
would be to say Maricopa County which includes Phoenix
and all its suburbs; Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale,
(Super Bowl) Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Paradise Valley,
    Sun City, Youngtown.

                 --------------------------------

So, here we have the first round of corrections and clarifications.
Please take your copy of 'areacode.c' (I assume you kept the .c
version once you compiled it!) and make the following additions and
changes, keeping them in strict numerical order:

"213downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California",
"310Los Angeles County area of California south of San Fernando Valley",
"630as of 9-1996 generally Dupage County west suburbs of Chicago",
"708generally south and west Cook County suburbs of Chicago (north is 847)",
"757as of 9-1996 southeastern Virginia, Norfolk, Williamsburg",
"818San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California",
"888as of mid-1996 used for toll-free calls (same as 800)",

The above, I think are absolute musts. The others above are also worth
consideration, depending on your own need for the information.

You'll note the original script had lots of one line entries, and
of necessity the information on each was limited due to space available.
What I would *really* like to do is have a somewhat longer, more
detailed entry for each code. Three or four lines perhaps, as is
done with the notes sent in regards 310/818, the state of Oregon, etc.
Anyone who wants to send in something fairly detailed about their own
area code can do so. Let's not get carried away -- maybe thirty or
forty word, three or four line summaries with rough boundary lines,
principal towns within, etc. With information available on as many
as possible, perhaps this script can be re-written to really have
some value.
